Can Multan Sultans Survive PCB’s Notice?

The legal warning given by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to Multan Sultans has rocked the world of cricket. The board’s action regarding a breach of contract follows several weeks of tensions following the scathing remarks of the owner, Ali Tareen, towards the management of the PSL, which cast doubt on the league’s progress and credibility.

Although controversial, Tareen was saying what many franchise owners had been feeling: the desire to make the PSL more professional in its activities. The Sultan’s defence emphasises the financial sacrifices he has made in terms of developing young people and infrastructure and denies allegations that he is out to harm the brand.

According to the sources, the franchise’s failure to respond to the PCB’s requirements may result in serious punishment, such as contract cancellation or blacklisting. The PCB alleges that Multan Sultans purposely postponed the ongoing valuation process to bargain in the renewal process.

Nevertheless, the politics of penalizing a large franchise for voicing its opinion have come under criticism. Tareen is considered by many fans to be an ardent reformist rather than a rebel. The issue of concern is now whether this confrontation would break the unity of the league as it enters its second decade.

This is a big reputational threat given the fact that PSL 11 preparations are already in progress. Unless solved amicably, then it may lose investor confidence in one of the strongest sporting brands in Pakistan, a situation that neither side can afford.
