On the first day of the second Test against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club on Thursday, Matt Henry took five wickets and Devon Conway scored an unbeaten half-century, putting New Zealand in a strong position.
Craig Ervine, the captain of Zimbabwe, made the wrong choice of batting first. His team’s batting unit only managed to score 125 runs in 48.5 overs, even though Brendan Taylor was back in the lineup.
Taylor, who was playing his first Test since 2021, was in charge of Zimbabwe’s batting until the 33rd over. He scored 44 runs off 107 balls, including six boundaries, and then stepped back.
After he was out, wicketkeeper batsman Tafadzwa Tsiga took over Zimbabwe’s innings and stayed unbeaten with a 54-ball 33 that included four boundaries.
Henry, who took nine wickets in the first game of the series at the same place, kept up his good form by capturing five wickets for 40 runs in 15 overs. Zakary Foulkes, another fast bowler, helped him by taking four wickets, and Matthew Fisher took one.
In response, New Zealand openers Conway and Will Young put their team in charge by putting together a 162-run partnership. The stand ended in the 35th over when Trevor Gwandu bowled Young, who had hit 11 boundaries and scored 74 runs off 101 balls.
Conway, on the other hand, kept his own and formed an unbeaten 12-run partnership with nightwatchman Jacob Duffy that lasted until the end of the day’s play.
At the end of the first day, New Zealand was 174/1, 49 runs ahead, with Conway and Duffy still not out on 79 and 8, respectively.
