India injury setback has disrupted the team’s plans in the ongoing five-match T20I series against England, with pacer Harshit Rana and mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy ruled out of the remaining fixtures due to hamstring injuries.
The development was confirmed by the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) that confirmed both the players were injured in the third T20I at Trent Bridge. After a medical check, the team management have said that they are not fit for game four and five in Bristol and Southampton.
As far as the squad is concerned, the two are missing in pace-spin balance. Rana is also a fast bowler that has been developing for India, while Chakaravarthy is an enigmatic spinner who can provide tactical flexibility in the middle overs, especially in T20 cricket where having a variety of bowlers to take wickets is an advantage.
The timing of the setback is important as India is trying to retain the momentum and tactical flexibility while playing away matches. After injuries to resources, strategies for the match may have to be readjusted; for example, workload distribution and combination changes for bowlers.
Injuries to the hamstrings in particular have come into focus in terms of player workload and recovery times, particularly in fast-paced cricket, such as T20, where explosive movements are common. The BCCI medical team had decided to play it safe and both players have been ruled out, so the decision is purely a precautionary one.
India have to come up with a solution as to how to get around the players who have left, given that they now have two games to play in the series. This situation also provides a chance for other bowlers to place themselves in clearly defined positions in stressful scenarios.
