The opposition was tough on the opening day against Bangladesh in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium and Pakistan bowling was unlucky, making it the main talking point.
Though a grassy surface brought optimism to the team in the early phase, the Pakistani bowlers were unable to convert their opportunity to its full extent. Bangladesh finished the match on top on day 3 with a composed 100 from captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to achieve 301/4. His innings lifted the spirits of the home side and turned the game in their favour.
Pakistan skipper Shan Masood had chosen to bowl first with the idea in mind that the weather would help seams. But the implementation was not always to the same standard. Those who bowled, such as Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Noman Ali and Mohammad Abbas picked one each.
Abbas spoke after the day’s play, giving a balanced perspective. He didn’t want to say that the day was a complete disaster. Instead, he spoke about the times when Pakistan did bowl in discipline but didn’t get rewarded. He said that several times were missed as well, with several ‘play-and-miss’ opportunities suggesting that luck was not on their side.
Abbas also noted that bowlers can still have some good luck with the pitch. He highlighted the fact that Pakistan has a good chance to bounce back with a new ball available early on Day 2. His emphasis continues to be on taking the early shot and reducing the overall score to be hard to catch for Bangladesh.
As a whole match, there is still a tie. Bangladesh has the edge up though, Pakistan’s experienced pacers can turn the tables in a flash. Day 2 will be key in determining Pakistan’s “unluckiness” or if there is a problem with its bowlers.
