Mohsin Naqvi: Pakistan’s Boycott Threat Sent Shockwaves Through ICC

Just hours ahead of the Pakistan match against the UAE, there was confusion in the Asia Cup 2025 as the team did not turn up on time to leave their hotel, creating speculation of a dramatic boycott.

The confrontation was associated with the notorious September 14 battle with India, when Suryakumar Yadav and his men declined to shake hands after the match. The PCB criticised match referee Andy Pycroft over his inability to deal with the situation, but the ICC dismissed Pakistan’s complaint that it was not substantiated.

The episode’s important aspect was its international repercussions. As per insiders, the tournament would have been dented due to the boycott, and Pakistan would have had to risk losing revenue worth 16 million dollars due to the boycott. More to the point, it would have further frozen the India-Pakistan cricket relationship when the bilateral relationship was at a standstill.

Confirmation of a pullout being supported at the highest levels in government, including the prime minister, came afterwards when PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the government was ready to support a pullout. He, however, said that Pakistan eventually prioritised keeping cricket above politics.

That ruling meant that the tournament could still take place, but this case highlighted how one scandal can have far-reaching consequences in the world of international cricket, subjecting bodies such as the ICC to a lot of stress.
