The Shadab Khan captaincy controversy has become a point of discussion following the endorsement of the concept of Shadab heading the Pakistan T20I national team after the ICC Men T20 world cup in 2026 by former Pakistan all rounder Shahid Afridi.
Afridi expressed his opinions in an interview on TV. He proposed that Shadab Khan would be promoted to take the position of captain assuming the present coaching arrangement goes on. The T20I team of Pakistan is currently headed by its captain Salman Ali Agha, although the current performance diminished leadership prospects.
The T20 world cup has not been smooth sailing in Pakistan. The team is in danger of being eliminated having lost to England in the Super Eight stage. This state of affairs has made more people speak about the potential modifications in the team and leadership.
Afridi reckons that Shadab Khan will make a good choice. He claimed that there are no strong applicants to the position in Pakistan at the moment. In his opinion, Shadab is an experienced person that will be able to lead the team.
Shadab has been included in T20 formation of Pakistan over a few years. Past on a few occasions, he has also led the side. His knowledge of the contemporary T20 cricket has been viewed as a strength.
Afridi also attributed the decision of the captaincy to the coach of the team Mike Hesson. He opined that in case the same coach staff is retained, Shadab might be the best fit to lead.
As discussed, the Pakistan cricket might be going through a transitory period following the world cup. The team management might seek a captain capable of creating a stable team to enter the tournaments in future.
