What Record Did Hayley Matthews Equal in the ICC Awards?

On Monday, the West Indies captain Hayley Matthews was announced as being the ICC women player of the month in June 2025, her already highly successful playing life by now having garnered another prestigious award to add to its existing collection.

Matthews beat other nominees South Africa Tazmin Brits and her West indies team mate Afy Fletcher to win the award. It is the fourth ICC player of the month award and makes Matthews tied in most such awards by a female cricketer with Australia player Ashleigh Gardner. Her last victories were in November 2021, October 2023 and April 2024.

The all-rounder won the award after holding a brilliant performance in the T20I series against South Africa where she was considered as the Player of the Series after helming her side 2-1 triumph within the home series.

Matthews also scored runs 147 in the three-match T20I series against South Africa with 120.49 strike rate and an eye-catching average of 73.50. She also made her contribution by bowl, bowling off-spin and knocking two wickets.

When she spoke to ICC Digital, Matthews termed it as an honour to be named the Player of the Month for the second time and how delighted she was to have helped the team win the series against South Africa.

I am very pleased to gain such award once again as Player of the Month. I am happy with how I am performing lately and most importantly, it was great to convert bounders to runs and help the team win one of the toughest T20I series against South Africa,” Matthews said.

Such recognition is good but I am focused on the future. I still have a whole lot to accomplish both individually and as a team. She said: We are on the right direction and I am thrilled on where we can go moving forward.
